Roquefixade signifie la "roche fissurée" et évoque l'énorme entaille naturelle comblée par la construction d'une arche de pierre du château. La forteresse épouse l'éperon rocheux. Les architectes royaux concentrent les éléments de défense sur le coté le plus vulnérable (le nord-est). Ils ne lésinent pas sur les moyens en entourant les batiments d'une première enceinte de 40 mètres de long (seule cette enceinte subsite partiellement).
